Why data centre airflow management is critical

A raised access floor creates a plenum beneath the working floor, a pressurised void that distributes cold air to where server racks need it.

Floor grilles and perforated tiles are the intended route air has out of that plenum and into the room.

Get the free area wrong or place the grille in the wrong position on the grid, and plenum pressure drops. Racks nearest the CRAC unit take the cooling that racks further away were supposed to get.

Hot aisle and cold aisle containment, now standard recommendation on most new designs, cuts cooling energy considerably against an uncontained layout.

None of that works without floor grilles placed correctly, since containment depends on cold air arriving where the design intended.

Poor airflow management rarely shows up as a single bad decision.

Instead, chillers run harder than needed, the PUE figure drifts worse than it should, and downtime turns up somewhere nobody budgeted for.

Free area decides how much air gets through a computer floor grille, which is why it carries real weight on the spec sheet.

Once that air’s moving, pressure drop, damper arrangement and loading decide what happens to it, and which one matters most depends on the application.

Matched to the application

A higher free area moves more air through the same 600 x 600mm tile, so fewer tiles are needed to hit the cooling load a rack demands. Fewer open tiles usually means better control over plenum pressure elsewhere in the room.

An Opposed Blade Damper fitted beneath the grille gives volume control at the individual rack or zone level, balancing airflow after the floor’s already down.

Get the loading classification wrong and the risk runs in one of two directions.

A light-duty grille can cost less but push it into a full-access area under trolley loads and it can flex or crack. Extra heavy-duty in a spot that only sees foot traffic is capacity you’re paying for and never using.

Get the specification wrong for the application and the grille either underperforms or carries more strength than it needs.

How CEG's grilles are built

The grille core is constructed from extruded aluminium bar and angle, welded into a fully supported retaining frame rather than clipped or riveted together. Face thickness varies by application, and we take the time to understand the job before recommending one.

Extra heavy-duty versions add reinforcement mullions behind the core to maintain structural integrity under load, with blades set horizontal across the grille face.

The frame profile sits directly on the floor pedestal for a flush mounting, designed to support continuous earth bonding across the grid, reducing the need for additional earth bonding connections at every tile.

It’s a detail installers notice even if nobody else on site does.

That level of construction is what helps a grille stay flush and stable well beyond the first fit-out inspection.

Aluminium construction and long-term stability

Aluminium doesn’t corrode the way mild steel can in a humidity-controlled data hall, and it adds less weight to the raised floor than a solid steel grille would.

That combination of corrosion resistance and manageable weight is why aluminium has become the standard material here.

Steel still has a place in the sub-frame beneath an aluminium core, where its rigidity backs up the load rating without the whole panel needing to be steel.
